Summary:
Yoshimura Kanʼichirō, a samurai from Nanbu-han (present Iwate Prefecture) joins Shinsengumi, a special police unit to counter antishogunate activities in Kyōto. Yoshimura appears to be motivated by the desire to survive and make money rather than by honor. Saitō Hajime, one of the leaders of Shinsengumi, is appalled by Yoshimura's attitude at first, but he begins to realize Yoshimura wants to survive for his beloved family back in his home town.
