This primarily passive approach has not been without problems. By requiring states to take decisive action against "terrorism" while not making clear what terrorism is, the Security Council has in fact encouraged abusive and human-rights-hostile policies where individual states may use whatever means they have to go after political opposition, trade unions, or religious, ethnic, separatist or indigenous minorities, by stigmatizing them as terrorists. These abusive policies have thereby been shielded by the political clout provided by the Security Council. Fifteen years ago, this was a central tenet in this author's very first substantive report as the first United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism."-- $c Provided by publisher. 610 20 $a United Nations. $b Security Council. 650 0 $a Terrorism (International law) 650 0 $a Terrorism $x Law and legislation. $x Law and legislation. 650 0 $a War on Terrorism, 2001-2009 $x Influence. 650 7 $a Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00972484 650 7 $a Terrorism (International law) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01765148 650 7 $a Terrorism $x Law and legislation. $x Law and legislation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01765505 648 7 $a 2001-2009 $2 fast 700 1 $a Vedaschi, Arianna, $e editor. 700 1 $a Scheppele, Kim Lane, $d 1953- $e editor. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Vedaschi, Arianna. $t 9/11 and the rise of global anti-terrorism law $d Cambridge, United Kingdom ; New York, NY : Cambridge University Press, 2021 $z 9781009023146 $w (DLC) 2021026736 830 0 $a Global law series. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231019014511.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=F2F2D220477411EC81CA9FE82DECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
