Noll. Although Christian believers agreed with one another that the Bible was authoritative and that it should be interpreted through common sense principles, there was rampant disagreement about what Scripture taught about slavery. Furthermore, most Americans continued to believe that God ruled over the affairs of people and nations, but they were radically divided in their interpretations of what God was doing in and through the war. In addition to examining what white and black Americans wrote about slavery and race, Noll surveys commentary from foreign observers. Protestants and Catholics in Europe and Canada saw clearly that no matter how much the voluntary reliance on scriptural authority had contributed to the construction of national civilization, if there were no higher religious authority than personal interpretation regarding an issue as contentious as slavery, the resulting public deadlock would amount to a full-blown theological crisis. By highlighting this theological conflict, Noll adds to our understanding of not only the origins but also the intensity of the Civil War. 651 0 $a United States $x Influence. $y Civil War, 1861-1865 $x Influence. 651 0 $a United States $x Religious aspects. $y Civil War, 1861-1865 $x Religious aspects. 650 0 $a Slavery and the church $z United States $x History $y 19th century. 650 0 $a Slavery $x History $z United States $x History $y 19th century. 651 0 $a United States $x Church history $y 19th century. 650 17 $a Burgeroorlogen. $2 gtt 650 17 $a Slavernij. $2 gtt 650 17 $a Kerk en maatschappij. $2 gtt 651 7 $a Verenigde Staten. $2 gtt 650 6 $a Esclavage $z EÌtats-Unis $x Aspect religieux. 650 6 $a Esclavage $x Histoire $z EÌtats-Unis $x Histoire $y 19e sieÌcle. 651 6 $a EÌtats-Unis $x Histoire $y 1861-1865 (Guerre de SeÌcession) 650 6 $a EÌtats-Unis $x Aspect religieux. $y 1861-1865 (Guerre de SeÌcession) $x Aspect religieux. 651 6 $a EÌtats-Unis $x Histoire religieuse $y 19e sieÌcle. 856 42 $z Additional Information at Google Books $u http://books.google.com/books?isbn=0807830127 856 42 $3 Publisher description $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0632/2005034944-d.html 856 42 $3 Book review (H-Net) $u http://www.h-net.org/review/hrev-a0f5g1-aa 941 $a 11 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20240724062917.0 952 $l OZAX845 $d 20240525035417.0 952 $l PMAX975 $d 20191119043900.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20180605021353.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20180201051614.0 952 $l UTAX314 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l UDAX314 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l OUAX845 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l OMAX631 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l SOAX911 $d 20100301073843.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=576A534C2B0C11DE82774608A8D7520A 994 $a 02 $b IOKInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
