In County Cork Ireland in 1920, Sir Richard Naylor and his wife, Lady Myra, descendants of the British aristocracy, know that their way of life is coming to an end as British rule in southern Ireland is abolished, and their ward, Lois Farquar, attempts to gain her freedom from their social class.
