This wide array of causes and correlates of African American male mortality, disability, and confinement suggests an area in need of interdisciplinary inquiry that examines the intersection between public health and public safety. Health analysts and social scientists across many disciplines have studied the disproportionately high levels of disease, disability, premature death, and exposure to the criminal justice system in African Americans communities extensively. To date, there has been little overlap between the diverse literatures even though the very same factors leading to crime and punishment among African American males often contribute to their poor physical and mental health profiles. This book addresses this omission by including chapters exploring the multifaceted dimensions of the varied disadvantages faced by African American males. Authors draw from an array of theoretical and methodological frameworks to illustrate how poor outcomes and sharp disparities among individuals and communities can be linked to the interplay of multiple factors operating at multiple levels. This volume is a useful resource for serious scholars and makers of public policy who seek to understand the causal interplay among economic and racial inequality, gender, crime, punishment, and health outcomes among all African Americans."--Page 4 of cover. 650 0 $a African American men $x Social conditions. 650 0 $a African American men $x Mental health. 650 0 $a African American men $x Diseases. 650 0 $a African American prisoners $x Mental health. 650 0 $a Discrimination in criminal justice administration $z United States. 650 7 $a African American men $x Diseases. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799241 650 7 $a African American men $x Social conditions. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799254 650 7 $a Discrimination in criminal justice administration. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00895034 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 700 1 $a Bruce, Marino A. $q (Marino Anton), $e editor. 700 1 $a Hawkins, Darnell Felix, $d 1946- $e editor. 773 18 $w 990007391770202771 $g no:31858069691461 830 0 $a Research in race and ethnic relations ; $v v. 20, $x 0195-7449 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191116014401.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=50BEF84A462211E9A3F20F6897128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
