Episode title from cassette label. Host, Scott Lohman ; guest, Sandy Berman.
Summary:
In this discussion of libraries and censorship, Berman, former head cataloger at the Hennepin County Library system, addresses the question "Are libraries dumbing down?". He finds that public library administrators are too often applying self-censorship and emulating corporate models in pursuit of faddish trends such as extensive digitization and e-resources while cutting back or eliminating government documents and performing mindless weeding -- all at the expense of providing access to more traditional print and audiovisual materials as well as alternative press publications that present widely divergent points of view. He urges library users and frontline staff to resist these trends by recommending non-mainstream materials in all formats that they are interested in finding in their libraries. Also addressed is the potential negative impact of the USA Patriot Act on libraries and bookstores.
