520 $a This film tells of the trials and tribulations of the Parisian exile of a group of Argentines in the late 70's, and how they seek to express their frustration, despair and anger by putting on a musical play with tango dancing which they entitle "The Exile of Gardel." Uncertain of their own futures they have problems getting their play finished and produced. Their thoughts and experiences in Paris are bound up with two famous Latin American characters whose ties with France were noteworthy -- General San Martín, liberator of South America, and the famous tango singer Carlos Gardel. San Martín spent the last 25 years of his life in French exile and died there in 1850. Gardel, who was born in France, emigrated with his mother at the age of three to Buenos Aires. He became an international music and film star but was killed in a plane crash at the age of 44. No one knew better than he, via the tango, how to sing of the Argentine soul and his ghost appears in a fantasy sequence in the film.
