While one might expect that these concerns would motivate people to become more politically engaged on the issues, this often doesn't happen, and the resulting inaction carries consequences for political debates and public policy. Moving beyond previously studied barriers to political organization, American Insecurity sheds light on the public's inaction over economic insecurities by showing that the rhetoric surrounding these issues is actually self-undermining. By their nature, the very arguments intended to mobilize individuals--asking them to devote money or time to politics--remind citizens of their economic fears and personal constraints, leading to undermobilization and nonparticipation. Adam Seth Levine explains why the set of people who become politically active on financial insecurity issues is therefore quite narrow. When money is needed, only those who care about the issues but are not personally affected become involved. When time is needed, participation is limited to those not personally affected or those who are personally affected but outside of the labor force with time to spare. The latter explains why it is relatively easy to mobilize retirees on topics that reflect personal financial concerns, such as Social Security and Medicare. In general, however, when political representation requires a large group to make their case, economic insecurity threats are uniquely disadvantaged. Scrutinizing the foundations of political behavior, American Insecurity offers a new perspective on collective participation"-- $c Provided by publisher. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 283-296) and index. 505 0 $a Financial threats and self-undermining rhetoric -- Do Americans view financial threats as important political issues? -- Who mobilizes? -- Why rhetoric about economic insecurity can be self-undermining -- How people respond to participation requests -- Political voice across issues -- Self-undermining rhetoric in the past and present. 651 0 $a United States $x Economic conditions $y 21st century. 651 0 $a United States $x Economic policy $y 21st century. 650 0 $a Finance, Personal $z United States. 650 0 $a Political participation $z United States. 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE $x Economic Policy. $x Economic Policy. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE $x General. $x General. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a BUSINESS & ECONOMICS $x General. $x General. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE $x Political Advocacy. $x Political Advocacy. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Economic history. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00901974 650 7 $a Economic policy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00902025 650 7 $a Finance, Personal. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00924449 650 7 $a Political participation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01069386 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 650 7 $a Wirtschaftliche Lage. $0 (DE-588)4248362-1 $2 gnd 651 7 $a USA. $0 (DE-588)4078704-7 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Finances personnelles $z EÌtats-Unis. $2 ram 650 7 $a Participation politique $z EÌtats-Unis. $2 ram 651 7 $a EÌtats-Unis $x Conditions eÌconomiques $y 21e sieÌcle. $2 ram 651 7 $a EÌtats-Unis $x Politique eÌconomique $y 21e sieÌcle. $2 ram 648 7 $a 2000 - 2099 $2 fast 856 42 $z Additional Information at Google Books $u http://books.google.com/books?vid=isbn9780691162966 856 41 $z Chapter 1 available from publisher's Web site: $u http://press.princeton.edu/chapters/s10329.pdf 941 $a 2 952 $l USUX851 $d 20161103032600.0 952 $l SOAX911 $d 20160506011152.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=E86A2E7A134F11E6AEBAE1B2DAD10320 994 $a C0 $b IOKInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
