To save people and animals, the Owenses started a microlending program that lifted the villagers out of poverty. But older elephants had been slaughtered, taking with them knowledge that had been passed along for generations. Left behind was social chaos--single moms, solitary orphans, rowdy gangs of young males--and a scientific mystery: how could there be so many babies and so few females old enough to be mothers? An orphan eventually provided the clue to a remarkable discovery. Meanwhile, the poachers shifted their sights from the elephants to the Owenses, finally driving them out of the country. After two decades in Africa, Mark and Delia returned to America to find social changes frighteningly similar to what they had seen among the elephants of Zambia.--From publisher description. 650 0 $a African elephant $x Conservation $z Luangwa River Valley (Zambia and Mozambique) 650 0 $a African elephant $x Effect of hunting on $z Luangwa River Valley (Zambia and Mozambique) 650 0 $a Nature conservation $x Economic aspects $z Luangwa River Valley (Zambia and Mozambique) 600 10 $a Owens, Delia. 600 10 $a Owens, Mark, $d 1944- 700 1 $a Owens, Delia. 856 41 $3 Table of contents $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/toc/ecip0518/2005023842.html 856 42 $3 Publisher description $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0623/2005023842-d.html 856 41 $3 Sample text $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0642/2005023842-s.html 856 42 $3 Contributor biographical information $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0736/2005023842-b.html 941 $a 13 952 $l DFPC353 $d 20240430021310.0 952 $l ALPE516 $d 20240417011717.0 952 $l SMPE094 $d 20240104015603.0 952 $l CMPE792 $d 20230629011713.0 952 $l FXPH314 $d 20220909014658.0 952 $l YEPF572 $d 20200204033939.0 952 $l TYPH572 $d 20200110020725.0 952 $l BAPH771 $d 20191113010119.0 952 $l BOPG851 $d 20181006035925.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20160823064607.0 952 $l UDAX314 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l PTAX572 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l KSPG296 $d 20090701080000.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=52F4B5C82B0C11DE82774608A8D7520A 994 $a 02 $b IWVInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
