This study addresses the anachronistic use of 'disability' in scholarship of the Romantic era, providing a disability studies theorized account that explores the relationship between ideas of function and aesthetics. Unpacking the politics of ability, the book reveals the centrality of capacity and weakness concepts to the egalitarian politics of the 1790s, and the importance of desert theory to debates about sentiment and the charitable relief of impaired soldiers. Clarifying the aesthetics of deformity as distinct from discussions of ability, Joshua uncovers a controversy over the use of deformity in picturesque aesthetics, offers accounts of deformity that anticipate recent disability studies theory, and discusses deformity and monstrosity as a blended category in Frankenstein. Setting aside the modern concept of disability, Joshua cogently argues for the historical and critical value of period-specific terms. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 274-299) and index. 505 00 $g Part II $t Monstrous Sights: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. $t William Godwin and Capacity -- $t Invigorating Women: Female Weakness in the Work of Mary Wollstonecraft -- $t Wordsworth's 'The Discharged Soldier' and the Question of Desert -- $g Part II $t Aesthetics of Deformity -- $t Picturesque Aesthetics: Theorizing Deformity in the Romantic Era -- $t Relational Deformity in Frances Burney's Camilla -- $t Monstrous Sights: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. 648 7 $a 1700-1899 $2 fast 650 0 $a People with disabilities in literature. 650 0 $a English literature $y 19th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a English literature $y 18th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Abnormalities, Human, in literature. 650 0 $a Romanticism. 650 7 $a Abnormalities, Human, in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00794473 650 7 $a English literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00911989 650 7 $a People with disabilities in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01057365 650 7 $a Romanticism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01100133 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 776 08 $i Ebook version : $z 9781108865241 830 0 $a Cambridge studies in Romanticism ; $v 130. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117015215.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=1DF9182278F711ECAF30597D2FECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
