Title vignette; title page in black and red; tail-pieces; initials; in Gothic type, in double columns; text within borders ruled in black decorated with crosses, keys, and scrolls. Half-title page: "Die Heilige Schrift" in red, blue, and white on central gilt panel; ornate compartmentalized border containing illustrations from the Bible. Includes Augustin Calmet's Katholisches Bibel-Wörterbuch, translated by John B. Maus with the approval of James F. Wood, archbishop of Philadelphia. Text contains many small illustrations of Biblical figures and events; also included are approximately 37 full-page illustrations and maps, some in colors and gilt, including portrait of Pope Leo XIII. New Testament includes "Familien Bilder" (4 photo album p.) at end. For additional background on Allioli's German Catholic Bible, cf. Darlow & Moule, esp. nos. 4352 and 4429. Brown leather binding with large gold-stamped ornamental cross sculpted in relief; corners and sides of front cover elaborately stamped in gold with religious seals and foliated decoration; gold-stamped spine with raised bands; remnants of two metal clasps; all edges gilt.
