Maria Aitken retraces the remarkable 1896 journey of Lizzie Hessel, who traveled four thousand miles on four rivers through three countries to join her husband on a rubber plantation in Bolivia. Lizzie became the first European to penetrate so far on the Amazon River system, traversing territory that Maria, even with twentieth century technology, was not able to enter.
