Summary:
Pharaon de Winter is a police detective who lives with his mother in a working-class town in northern France. He agonizes over the evil he confronts every day during the course of his work. The brutal rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl tests Pharaon's profound humanity to its limits as the investigation proceeds to its climax, and as Pharaon struggles to grasp the crime's meaning.
