The film shows the process of growing up in a place afflicted by generations of economic and educational segregation. Growing up in a neighborhood of Bertie David "Bud" Perry calls "the 'hood," Bud has developed a tough exterior, leading to repeated suspensions for fighting and altercations with authority that threaten to derail his dreams of stability and success as an adult. Reginald "Junior" Askew lives in a small home, wedged between fields of corn, with his sister, and their mother -- left to care for her children when their father was incarcerated for murder when Junior was three. For Davonte "Dada" Harrell, the youngest of the three, family is everything and the recent separation of his parents weighs heavily on his heart. All three boys attend The Hive, an alternative school for at-risk boys. But, when budget shortfalls lead the Board of Education to close The Hive, Junior, Bud, and Dada must return to Bertie High School and a system that once failed them. This documentary weaves the young men's stories together as the boys navigate school, unemployment, violence, first love, fatherhood, and estrangement from family members and mentors, all while trying to define their identities. Intimate access allows an honest portrayal of the boys' perspectives and an in-depth look at issues facing rural America's youth and what happens in the everyday lives of young people caught in the complex interplay of generational poverty, economic isolation, and educational inequity."--Container. 586 $a Official selection, AFI Docs Film Festival ; official selection, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. 650 0 $a Rural African American youth $z Bertie County. $z Bertie County. 650 0 $a African American high school boys $z Bertie County. $z Bertie County. 650 0 $a African American teenage boys $z Bertie County. $z Bertie County. 650 0 $a Coming of age $z Bertie County. $z Bertie County. 650 0 $a Alternative schools $z Bertie County. $z Bertie County. 650 0 $a Rural African Americans $z Bertie County $z Bertie County $x Economic conditions. 650 0 $a Rural African Americans $z Bertie County $z Bertie County $x Social conditions. 650 0 $a Rural African American youth $x Education $z Bertie County. $z Bertie County. 650 7 $a African American high school boys. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01922995 650 7 $a African American teenage boys. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799391 650 7 $a Alternative schools. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00806184 650 7 $a Coming of age. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01763769 650 7 $a Rural African American youth. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01749986 651 7 $a North Carolina $z Bertie County. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01208947 655 7 $a Nonfiction films. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Documentary films. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a CineÌma veÌriteÌ films. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Feature films. $2 lcgft 655 4 $a Feature films $z United States. 655 7 $a Video recordings for the hearing impaired. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a CineÌma veÌriteÌ films. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710268 655 7 $a Documentary films. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710390 655 7 $a Feature films. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710384 655 7 $a Nonfiction films. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710269 655 7 $a Video recordings for the hearing impaired. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710450 700 1 $a Byrne, Margaret $c (Director), $e screenwriter. $e film producer, $e screenwriter. 700 1 $a Kibbe, Ian Robertson, $e film producer. 700 1 $a Simmer, Leslie, $e editor of moving image work. $e editor of moving image work. 700 1 $a Stuyvesant, Jon, $e cinematographer. $e cinematographer. 700 1 $a Kuhn, Eric Andrew, $e composer (expression) 710 2 $a Kartemquin Films, $e production company. $e production company. 710 2 $a Beti Films, $e production company. 710 2 $a Cinema Guild, $e publisher. 941 $a 1 945 $a dvv 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20190212020055.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=A0010586E96D11E8978F920F97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
