I investigate the divide in Afro-Latin American research that usually favors either Hispanic-America or Brazil, but not both. I argue that contemporary novelists have adapted the coming-of-age novel to explore central themes in the Afro-Latin American experience such as Blackness, African religions and folkloric traditions, and immigration. While there is no firm consensus on the term Blackness, scholars typically use the term to describe the social, cultural, and historical experience of Afro-descendants in the diaspora. The Afro-Latin American bildungsromans examined in this study include a number of religions such as Catholicism, Spiritism, and syncretic folk religions as well as SanteriÌa and Umbanda reflecting the variety of beliefs in Latin America. I have found that young people turn to religions and spiritual traditions in time of need. Going on a journey as part of one's personal development is one of the central themes of many bildungsroman, and this pertains too in Afro-Latin American novels. Caribbean characters are depicted as immigrating to the United States whereas few Brazilians have enough resources to travel to North America and instead move to larger cities within their own country"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Bildungsromans, Brazilian $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Brazilian fiction $x History and criticism. $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Bildungsromans, Caribbean (Spanish) $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Caribbean fiction (Spanish) $x History and criticism. $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Emigration and immigration in literature. 650 0 $a Race in literature. 650 0 $a Religion in literature. 650 0 $a Identity (Psychology) in literature. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Wasserman, Bonnie S., 1966- $t Coming of age in the contemporary Afro-Latin American novel $d Rochester : University of Rochester Press, 2022 $z 9781800105171 $w (DLC) 2021050527 830 0 $a Rochester studies in African history and the diaspora. 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20230302021214.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=C079E07EA39211ED924352D529ECA4DB 994 $a C0 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
