Inspired by his teenage memories of Nevil Shute's 'On the Beach' (1957), a disturbing vision of the world following nuclear war, McMillan found in Pripyat the embodiment of an irradiated city still standing but void of human life. As one of the first artists to gain access to "The Zone," McMillan initially explored the evacuated areas with few constraints and in solitude, save for an occasional scientist monitoring the effects of radioactivity. Returning year after year enabled him to revisit the sites of earlier photographs--sometimes fortuitously, sometimes by design--bearing witness to the forces of nature as they reclaimed the abandoned communities. Above all, his commitment has been to probe the relentless dichotomy between growth and decay in The Zone. -- publisher's statement. 600 10 $a McMillan, David, $d 1945- 600 17 $a McMillan, David, $d 1945- $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00486910 611 27 $a Chernobyl Nuclear Accident (Chornobyl£, Ukraine : 1986) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00853649 600 17 $a McMillan, David $d 1945- $2 gnd 650 0 $a Chernobyl Nuclear Accident, Chornobyl£, Ukraine, 1986 $v Pictorial works. 651 0 $a Pryp'iÅat£ (Ukraine) $v Pictorial works. 651 0 $a Chornobyl£ (Ukraine) $v Pictorial works. 650 0 $a Documentary photography $z Pryp'iÅat£. $z Pryp'iÅat£. 650 0 $a Photography, Artistic. 650 7 $a Documentary photography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00896093 650 7 $a Photography, Artistic. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01061964 651 7 $a Ukraine $z Chornobyl£. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01235729 651 7 $a Ukraine $z Pryp'iÅat£. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01203681 650 7 $a PHOTOGRAPHY $x General. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Dichotomie $2 gnd 650 7 $a Fotografie $2 gnd 650 7 $a Natur $2 gnd 650 7 $a RuÂckerinnerung $g Motiv $2 gnd 650 7 $a Sperrgebiet $2 gnd 650 7 $a VermoÂgensabschoÂpfung $2 gnd 650 7 $a Verlassenheit $2 gnd 651 7 $a Tschernobyl $2 gnd 648 7 $a 1986 $2 fast 655 7 $a Pictorial works. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423874 700 12 $a McMillan, David, $d 1945- $t Photographs. $k Selections. 700 1 $a Baillargeon, Claude, $e contributor. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231021025326.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=C45B611068DD11EA9C5A9E4D97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
