Until "Nana," about the life of a prostitute, becomes a smash hit and turns Zola into a celebrity, champion of the people. As he churns out a string of similar books that make him quite rich, his old friend Paul Cezanne tells him "An artist should remain poor." His determined intervention in the Dreyfus Affair, at the request of Dreyfus's wife Lucie, results in "J'accuse!" his famous denunciation of the Army, and leads to a conviction for libel. He flees to England, where he remains until granted amnesty. Unfortunately, he dies before the news that Dreyfus was exonerated and reinstated to full rank can reach him. Indicative of the mores of its time, during the course of this clear story about institutionalized anti-Semitism, the word "Jew" is never mentioned. And while most Hollywood biographies must be taken with a grain--if not a handful--of salt, the film makes a reasonable effort at accuracy and completeness. 586 $a Academy Award winner, 1937: Best Picture (Warner Bros.) ; Best Writing, Screenplay (Norman Reilly Raine, Heinz Herald, Geza Herczeg) ; Academy Awards for Best Writing, Screenplay--Heinz Herald, Geza Herczeg, Norman Reilly Raine; Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Joseph Schildkraut) 521 8 $a MPAA Rating: Not rated; Canadian Home Video Rating: Rated G. 500 $a Story by Heinz Herald and Geza Herczeg, based on Matthew Josephson's "Zola and his time." 500 $a Full screen (1.37:1). 500 $a Special features include: dramatic short, Taking the count (22 min.); musical short, Mal Hallett and his Orchestra (10 min.); audio recording of 5/8/39 Lux radio theater production starring Muni (59 min.); theatrical trailer (4 min.). 546 $a In English. 505 0 $a Credits -- Job for Emile -- Official warning -- Injustice all around -- Nana's story -- "Nana's" profits -- "Downfall" -- Defying the censor -- Cezanne's goodbye -- Traitor in their midst -- Arrested for treason -- "I'm innocent!" -- You must survive -- Military maneuvers -- Lucie appeals to Zola -- I accuse -- Inflaming the mob -- On trial -- Picquart testifies -- Written and unspoken -- Intolerance all around -- Let truth conquer -- Another closed case -- Honor of the army -- Homecomings to France -- By force of ideas -- Moment of conscience -- Cast list. 506 $a Educational and home use only. 508 $a Photography, Tony Gaudio ; film editor, Warren Low ; music, Max Steiner ; art director, Anton Grot ; costumes by Milo Anderson and Ali Hubert. 600 10 $a Zola, EÌmile, $d 1840-1902 $v Drama. 600 10 $a Dreyfus, Alfred, $d 1859-1935 $x Trials, litigation, etc. $v Drama. 600 10 $a CeÌzanne, Paul, $d 1839-1906 $v Drama. 600 17 $a CeÌzanne, Paul, $d 1839-1906 $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00035623 600 17 $a Dreyfus, Alfred, $d 1859-1935 $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00054758 600 17 $a Zola, EÌmile, $d 1840-1902 $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00032376 610 10 $a France. $b ArmeÌe $x History $y 19th century $v Drama. 610 17 $a France. $b ArmeÌe $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00539214 648 7 $a 1800-1899 $2 fast 650 0 $a Authors $v Drama. 650 0 $a Novelists, French $y 19th century $v Drama. 650 0 $a Men $x Conduct of life $v Drama. 650 0 $a Man-woman relationships $v Drama. 650 0 $a Trials (Treason) $z France. 650 0 $a Scandals $x Political aspects $z France $v Drama. 650 0 $a Politics and literature $z France $v Drama. 650 0 $a Antisemitism $z France $v Drama. 650 7 $a Antisemitism $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00810769 650 7 $a Authors $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00821688 650 7 $a Intellectual life $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00975769 650 7 $a Man-woman relationships $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01007080 650 7 $a Men $x Conduct of life $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01015986 650 7 $a Novelists, French $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01039731 650 7 $a Politics and government $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919741 650 7 $a Politics and literature $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01069960 650 7 $a Scandals $x Political aspects $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01106363 650 7 $a Trials $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01156290 650 7 $a Trials (Treason) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01156419 651 0 $a France $x Intellectual life $y 19th century $v Drama. 651 0 $a France $x Politics and government $y 19th century $v Drama. 651 0 $a London (England) $v Drama. 651 0 $a Paris (France) $v Drama. 651 7 $a England $z London $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204271 651 7 $a France $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204289 651 7 $a France $z Paris $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205283 655 7 $a video recordings (physical artifacts) $2 aat $0 (CStmoGRI)aatgf300028682 655 7 $a Biographical films $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710277 655 7 $a Drama $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423879 655 7 $a Feature films $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710384 655 7 $a History $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 $a Video recordings $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01692913 655 7 $a Video recordings for the hearing impaired $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710450 655 7 $a Biographical films. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Historical films. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Film adaptations. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Feature films. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Fiction films. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Video recordings for the hearing impaired. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Video recordings. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Drama. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a VideÌos pour personnes handicapeÌes auditives. $2 rvmgf $0 (CaQQLa)RVMGF-000000009 655 7 $a Films biographiques. $2 rvmgf $0 (CaQQLa)RVMGF-000000081 655 7 $a VideÌos. $2 rvmgf $0 (CaQQLa)RVMGF-000001738 655 7 $a TheÌaÌtre. $2 rvmgf $0 (CaQQLa)RVMGF-000000474 655 7 $a Films historiques. $2 rvmgf $0 (CaQQLa)RVMGF-000000093 655 7 $a Films de fiction. $2 rvmgf $0 (CaQQLa)RVMGF-000000003 655 7 $a Adaptations cineÌmatographiques. $2 rvmgf $0 (CaQQLa)RVMGF-000000013 773 0 $t Roger Blunck Collection (Library of Congress) 730 02 $i Container of (work): $a Life of Emile Zola (Motion picture) 710 2 $a Warner Bros.
