Benjamin C. Howard was reporter of the Decisions of the Supreme Court. He had the Dred Scott decision condensed into this volume. "This case was brought up, by writ of error, from the Circuit Court of the United States for the district of Missouri. It was an action of trespass vi et armis instituted in the Circuit Court by Scott against Sandford."--p. 396. Dred Scott, his wife, Harriet, and their daughters, Eliza and Lizzie, were originally the property of army surgeon, Dr. John Emerson. Before the commencement of this suit, Dr. Emerson sold the Scott family to John F. A. Sandford.
