Notes:
Imprint from prospectus, laid in. Issued in slipcase, 42 cm. "In their simplest incarnations -- a line for an I, a circle for an O -- letterforms reveal their true nature: they are Forms first, Letters second. The connective tissue that transforms a circle into a letterform is only as strong as the imagination and consensus of the community for whom that circle represents the letter O."--Book artist's statement, in prospectus. "One hundred sixteen copies of Roma Abstract were printed letterpress from photopolymer plates by Nancy Loeber. The paper is 30 lb. Chartham Translucent, stab-sewn into black Plike covers. The book is housed in a frosted acrylic slipcase made by Canal Plastics."--Prospectus, laid in. "The book's cover is printed with the text from the inscription on Trajan's column, the letterforms of which are widely regarded as the apotheosis of Roman alphabetical form."--Prospectus, laid in. Library copy is 19 of 116 and signed by the artist. Lacks laid in prospectus. IaU
Summary:
A geometric alphabet based on Greek, Etruscan, and Roman letterforms. The laid in prospectus containing the artist's statement, which offers Maret's only text, explains the book is also intended as a political statement "echoing the absurd mockery of statehood in which we find ourselves living."
