Summary:
Twelve literary short stories explore the frailties of the body and the mind. Surgeons face the limitations of their profession, including their own self-doubts and the ethical dilemmas the confront them on a daily basis. Doctors who serve in war zones from Vietnam to Afghanistan to the emergency room about to cave in during the onslaught of Covid-19 patients are tested as never before. Aging physicians confront their own lapses in judgment. Devotion to a career where they feel all powerful has sometimes meant the collapse of their marriages and estrangement from their children. A physician who visits a patient on death row must try to explain to his son what it means to be a healer.
