The European Recovery Planâbetter known as the Marshall Plan, after chief advocate Secretary of State George C. Marshallâwas in part an act of charity but primarily an act of self-interest, intended to prevent postwar Western Europe from succumbing to communism. By speeding the recovery of Europe and establishing the basis for NATO and diplomatic alliances that endure to this day, it became one of the most successful U.S. government programs ever. The Brookings Institution played an important role in the adoption of the Marshall Plan. At the request of Arthur Vandenberg, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Brookings scholars analyzed the plan, including the specifics of how it could be implemented. Their report gave Vandenberg the information he needed to shepherd the plan through a Republican dominated Congress in a presidential election year. --Publisher 610 20 $a Marshall Plan. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85229815 610 20 $a Marshall Plan $v Sources. 610 20 $a Brookings Institution $x History. 650 0 $a Economic assistance, American $z Europe. 650 0 $a Reconstruction (1939-1951) $z Europe. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008110541 651 0 $a United States $x Foreign economic relations $z Europe. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007100072 651 0 $a United States $x Foreign relations. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140058 610 27 $a Brookings Institution. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00557808 610 27 $a Marshall Plan. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00606082 611 27 $a Reconstruction (1939-1951) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01091544 650 7 $a Diplomatic relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 $a Economic assistance, American. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00901618 650 7 $a International economic relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00976891 651 7 $a Europe. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01245064 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1939-1951 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 $a Sources. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423900 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423900 700 1 $a Jones, Bruce D., $e editor. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2001029908 700 1 $a Talbott, Strobe, $e writer of foreword. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79077254 710 2 $a Brookings Institution, $e issuing body. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81067841 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20180104060021.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=B3F97976F11E11E79D0FC10F97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
