While much scholarly attention has been given to what the riddles have to say abuot human society and culture, about heroism, service, sex and war, little has been said about the natural world. The author argues that there is a programme of resistance to anthropocentrism at work in the riddles, whereby the riddles challenge human-centred ways of depicting and interpreting the created world: depictions of the marginalised perspectives of sentient and non-sentient beings such as trees and animals are not just a characteristic of the riddle genre, but are actively used to explore the point of view of the natural world and the impact humanity has on its non-human inhabitants. She also draws on eco-theology to deepen our understanding of the depiction of the natural world in the riddles, via the main themes of place, labour, creation, transformation, accountability, mastery and wisdom. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 199-213) and index 630 00 $a Exeter book. 650 0 $a Riddles, English (Old) $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a English poetry $y Old English, ca. 450-1100 $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Riddles in literature. 650 0 $a Nature in literature. 630 07 $a Exeter book. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01357628 650 7 $a Nature in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01034680 650 7 $a English poetry $x Old English. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710965 650 7 $a Riddles, English (Old) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01097632 650 7 $a Riddles in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01097591 648 7 $a 450-1100 $2 fast 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 830 0 $a Nature and environment in the Middle Ages, $x 2399-3804 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231018013034.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=AC92A51C065511E8AD8CF06897128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
