Summary:
"In 1973, workers at the Brookside mine in Harlan walked off the job after the mine owners refused to recognize their affiliation with the United Mine Workers of America. Producer-director Barbara Kopple's documentary records how bitter feelings between management and employees exploded into violent confrontations between strikebreakers and pickets. The film (which has no narration) also includes stills and newsreels of labor turmoil in 1930s 'bloody Harlan'"--TV guide, July 31, 1979.
