Her patron loved her very much and left her with enough money to live the rest of her life without working. After Okane's father died she and her mother returned to their home village. The people ostracized Okane because of her past and she was left alone when her mother died. Seisaku, a very promising young man, who received honors in the military, returned home and tried to help Okane. They fell in love and started living together but their marriage was opposed by his family. Seisaku was everything for the lonely Okane. In the meantime he went to war, but temporarily returned home due to injuries. Just before he was about to leave for the front, Okane crushed his eyes so that he could not go to war again. Seisaku lost his sight, but later came to realize the how deeply Okane cared for him and understood the meaning of her love.
