For more than two hundred years the disease had terrorized the United States, killing an estimated 1000,000 people in the 19th century alone. Shortly after Reed and his team arrived in Havana they began testing the radical theories of a Cuban doctor, Carlos Finlay, who believed that mosquitoes spread yellow fever. This production documents the heroic efforts of Reed,s medical team to verify Finlay's theory. Eventually their discovery enabled the United States to successfully eradicate the disease among workers constructing the Panama Canal, making possible the completion of one of the most strategic waterways in the world. When yellow ever struck New Orleans in 1905, federal public health officials launched an aggressive mosquito eradication campaign and successfully ended the epidemic. It was the last yellow fever outbreak in the United States, and the first major public health triumph of the 20th century. 521 8 $a MPAA rating: Not rated. 538 $a DVD, region 1, full screen presentation; stereo. 546 $a Closed-captioned. 600 10 $a Reed, Walter, $d 1851-1902. 600 10 $a Lazear, Jesse William, $d 1866-1900. 600 10 $a Carroll, James, $d 1854-1907. 600 10 $a Finlay, Carlos Juan, $d 1833-1915. 610 20 $a Yellow Fever Commission (U.S.) 650 0 $a Yellow fever $x History. 650 0 $a Yellow fever $z New Orleans. $z New Orleans. 650 2 $a Disease Outbreaks $x history $z United States. 650 2 $a History, 20th Century $z United States. 650 2 $a Yellow Fever $x history $z United States. 650 2 $a Mosquito Control $x history. 655 0 $a Documentary television programs. 655 0 $a Video recordings for the hearing impaired. 700 1 $a Bosch, Adriana. $4 prd 700 1 $a Hunt, Linda, $d 1945- $4 nrt 710 2 $a Bosch and Company, Inc. 710 2 $a PBS Home Video. 730 0 $a American experience (Television program) 856 42 $u http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/fever/index.html 856 42 $3 American Experience archive $u http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/archives.html 939 $a 5738396 941 $a 3 945 $a dvv 952 $l CBPF522 $d 20220105010959.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=3AA82F5C2B0E11DE8F715E08A8D7520A 994 $a 02 $b UIB 952 $l CAPH522 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20090701080000.0Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
