Many found it surprising, then, when setbacks in recent conflicts led the same army to adopt a COIN doctrine. Scholarly debates have primarily employed existing theories of military bureaucracy or culture to explain the army's re-embrace of COIN, but Peter Campbell advances a unique argument centering on military realism to explain the complex evolution of army doctrinal thinking from 1960 to 2008. In five case studies of U.S. Army doctrine, Campbell pits military realism against bureaucratic and cultural perspectives in three key areas--nuclear versus conventional warfare, preferences for offense versus defense, and COIN missions--and finds that the army has been more doctrinally flexible than those perspectives would predict. He demonstrates that decision makers, while vowing in the wake of Vietnam to avoid COIN missions, nonetheless found themselves adapting to the geopolitical realities of fighting "low intensity" conflicts. In essence, he demonstrates that pragmatism has won out over dogmatism. At a time when American policymakers remain similarly conflicted about future defense strategies, Campbell's work will undoubtedly shape and guide the debate"-- $c Provided by publisher. 505 0 $a Military Realism -- Flexible Response, the Nuclear Battlefield, and Counterinsurgency: Kennedy and Army Doctrine in the 1960s -- Army Doctrine in the Shadow of Vietnam: Field Manual 100-5, Operations, 1968 -- From Active Defense to AirLand Battle: The Cold War Doctrine of the '70s and '80s -- The Power Projection Army: Doctrine in the Post-Cold War Era until the Eve of September 11 -- Transforming under Fire: The Global War on Terror, Counterinsurgency, Iraq, and Operations 2008. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 651 0 $a United States $x Military policy. 650 0 $a Military doctrine $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Military doctrine $z United States $x History $y 21st century. 650 7 $a HISTORY / Military / Strategy. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a HISTORY / Military / United States. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Military doctrine. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01021106 650 7 $a Military policy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01021386 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1900-2099 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Campbell, Peter P., author. $t Military realism $d Columbia, Missouri : University of Missouri, [2019] $z 9780826274267 $w (DLC) 2018055464 830 0 $a American military experience series 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20190702015149.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=07E09D549C8F11E981649E3E97128E48 994 $a 92 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
