520 $a In early 1968 a young Marine lieutenant arrived at Hill 861, just west of the Khe Sanh Combat Base. His name was Frank Castle. Over the year that followed, he and the Marines of his first command would struggle to survive an ordeal on the razors edge: a tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Writer Garth Ennis and artist Goran Parlov go back before the days of the Punisher, when Castles destiny had yet to be caved in lead. Determined to protect his men from both enemy aggression and incompetent authority, the young officer soon learns his trade but with a particularly deadly foe waiting in the shadows, his efforts may not be enough. In the eyes of his platoon, there is something special about their commander - he seems either a born leader of men, or a warrior far too careless of his own humanity. Was Frank Castle always doomed to be the Punisher? Could he have chosen another path? Or did his nations tragic misstep in Southeast Asia doom him as it do so many others, locking him into a tour of duty that would never end?
