Born and raised in Brooklyn, Shabazz began photographing people he encountered on New York streets in the late 1970s, creating an archive of cultural shifts and struggles across the city. His portraits underscore the street as a space for self-presentation, whether through fashion or pose. In every instance Shabazz aims, in his words, to represent individuals and communities with "honor and dignity." This book - awarded the Gordon Parks Foundation / Steidl Book Prize - presents, for the first time, Shabazz's work from the 1970s to '90s as it exists in his archive: small prints thematically grouped and sequenced in traditional family photo albums that function as portable portfolios. Shabazz began making portraits in the mid-1970s in Brooklyn, Queens, the West Village and Harlem. His camera was also at his side while working as an officer at Rikers Island in the 1980s, where he took portraits of inmates that he later shared with their friends and families. Shabazz had his rolls of color film processed at a one-hour photo shop that provided two copies of each print: he typically gave one to his sitters, and the second he organized into changing albums to be shown to future subjects. This book features selections from over a dozen albums, many never-before-seen, and includes his earliest photographs as well as images taken inside Rikers Island, all accompanied by essays that situate Shabazz's work within the broader history of photography."-- $c Publisher's description. 586 $a The Gordon Parks Foundation / Steidl Book Prize, 2022 600 10 $a Shabazz, Jamel, $d 1960- $1 https://isni.org/isni/0000000078691308 600 17 $a Shabazz, Jamel, $d 1960- $2 fast $1 https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJjHjh7RpbH9VCPVbjc9Dq 650 0 $a Photograph albums $z New York. $z New York. 650 0 $a Portrait photography $z New York. $z New York. 650 0 $a Street photography $z New York. $z New York. 650 0 $a Photography of families. 650 0 $a African American families $v Portraits. 650 0 $a African Americans $z New York $z New York $v Portraits. 650 6 $a Photographies $x Albums $z New York. $z New York. 650 6 $a Portraits (Photographie) $z New York. $z New York. 650 6 $a Photographie de rue $z New York. $z New York. 650 6 $a Photographie de familles. 650 6 $a Familles noires americaines $v Portraits. 650 6 $a Noirs americains $z New York $z New York $v Portraits. 650 7 $a Photography of families $2 fast 650 7 $a African Americans $2 fast 650 7 $a African American families $2 fast 650 7 $a Photograph albums $2 fast 650 7 $a Portrait photography $2 fast 650 7 $a Street photography $2 fast 651 7 $a New York (State) $z New York $2 fast $1 https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39QbtfRvQh7864Jh4rDGBFDWc 653 4 $a 1900-1999 655 7 $a photobooks. $2 aat 655 7 $a portraits. $2 aat 655 7 $a Portraits $2 fast 655 7 $a Photobooks $2 fast 655 7 $a Photobooks. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Portraits. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Livres de photographies. $2 rvmgf 655 7 $a Portraits. $2 rvmgf 700 1 $a Raz-Russo, Michal, $e contributor $e contributor $1 https://isni.org/isni/0000000120144210 700 1 $a George, Nelson, $e contributor. $4 ctb 700 1 $a Kunhardt, Peter W., $c Jr., $d 1982- $e contributor. $4 ctb $1 https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjBHCjFwF73h6RtqKddBWC 700 1 $a Willis, Deborah, $d 1948- $e contributor. $4 ctb $1 https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJr83H8gtxG3RyCC7MQ6rq 700 1 $a Wilson, Leslie M., $e contributor. $4 ctb 700 12 $a Shabazz, Jamel, $d 1960- $t Works. $k Selections. 710 2 $a Gordon Parks Foundation. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20240517012614.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=E1ABC162141211EF8F56A7732FECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
