The opera tells the story of a troubadour (Bejun Mehta) who has an affair with his employer (Christopher Purves)'s wife Agnès (Barbara Hannigan). When her husband finds out he kills the troubadour and feeds Agnès his heart, unbeknownst to her. When she discovers what she has done she is driven to suicide.
