"Don De Marco, an out-of-work circus performer with a secret past, is stranded on a remote moorland lay-by, anxiously awaiting a telephone call which will send him on an exotic trip to Europe - and anonymity - when an outrageous act by his alcoholic wife, Denise, attracts the attention of the obsessive Detective Inspector Atherton. Abandoned by Denise, Don becomes romantically entangled with Alice Howard, the local land-owner's secretary and, when the call comes, the pair impulsively escape the moor. Tracing them to the coast, Atherton becomes convinced that the lovers have murdered Denise and his fixation with their guilt sets off a chain of intrigue, pursuit and eventually, death.
