Annie Ring here interweaves close analysis of literary fiction and life-writing by former Stasi spies and victims with documents from the archive, new readings from literary modernism and cultural theories of the self. In its pursuit of the strange power of the Stasi, the book introduces an archetypal character in the writing of German unification: one who is not sovereign over her or his actions, but instead is compelled by an imperative to collaborate - an imperative that persists in new forms in the post-Cold War age. Ring's study identifies a monumental historical shift after 1989, from a collaboration that took place in concert with others, in a manner that could be recorded in the archive, to the more isolated and ultimately less accountable complicities of the capitalist present. While considering this shift in the most recent texts by East German writers, Ring provocatively suggests that their accounts of collaboration under the Stasi, and of the less-than-sovereign subjectivity to which it attests, remain urgent for understanding the complicities to which we continue to consent in the present day."--Back cover. 520 $a Reading works of literature since German unification in the light of previously unseen files from the archives of the Stasi, this volume uncovers how writers to the present day have explored colaboration as a challenge to the sovereignty of subjectivity. 650 0 $a Authors, German $x Political activity $z Germany (East) 650 0 $a Collaborationists $z Germany (East) $x Psychology. 650 0 $a Informers $z Germany (East) $x Psychology. 650 0 $a Politics and literature $z Germany $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Politics and literature $z Germany $x History $y 21st century. 650 0 $a German literature $z Germany (East) $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a German literature $y 20th century $x History and criticism. 610 10 $a Germany (East). $b Ministerium fuÂr Staatssicherheit $x Records and correspondence. 653 $a (lcsh)Germany (East).--Ministerium fuÂr Staatssicherheit. 653 $a (fast)Germany (East).--Ministerium fuÂr Staatssicherheit. 653 $a (fast)Since 1900 653 $a (lcsh)German literature--Germany (East)--History and criticism. 653 $a (lcsh)German literature--20th century--History and criticism. 653 $a (lcsh)Politics and literature--Germany (East) 653 $a (lcsh)Civil society--Germany (East) 653 $a (fast)Civil society. 653 $a (fast)German literature. 653 $a (fast)Politics and government. 653 $a (fast)Politics and literature. 653 $a (lcsh)Germany (East)--Politics and government--1989-1990. 653 $a (lcsh)Germany--Politics and government--1990- 653 $a (fast)Germany. 653 $a (fast)Germany (East) 653 $a (fast)Criticism, interpretation, etc. 856 42 $u http://d-nb.info/1077999666/04 $3 Inhaltsverzeichnis 941 $a 2 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191217031758.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20170907010410.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=128AA2462FC611E7A3652FCCDAD10320 994 $a C0 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
