A hardened seventh grade girl changes her name to Fishkill Carmel after her abusive grandfather dies and her drug-addicted mother leaves. She moves to a new school in order to toughen up her image but meets Duck-Duck Farina who, along with her mother, teaches Fishkill what family can truly mean.
