Even as neocolonialism incorporates without acknowledgment the anti-Blackness and settler-colonial roots of its past, along with an anti-immigrationist sentiment--it does not do so overtly. Rather it does so through a range of biopolitical, ontopolitical, and globalizing neoliberal economic norms. Focusing on the discrimination claims of Muslim women, this study examines juridical and political approaches that dismiss Muslim women and other populations of color as culturally backward, misguided in their thinking, and gratuitously nonconformist. Likewise, it analyses the experience of excruciation undergone by the addressees of racial dismissal. Excruciation names the phenomena by which vulnerable populations are pressed into hopeless performances of cultural assimiliation. Racial dismissal is excavated through legal opinions, court transcripts, and other encounters between Muslim women and the state. This work finds that the racial address of dismissal and the phenomena of excruciation have been pivotal to a liberal juridical order that otherwise claims neutrality. By concentrating on the treatment of Muslim women, this book uncovers dynamics of social and racial division which have inhabited and bolstered liberal legal neutrality from its inception. This book's framework, while focusing on Muslim women in the U.S., is a template for understanding how exclusion is juridically implemented for other racialized and marginalized populations"-- $c Provided by publisher. 505 00 $a Machine generated contents note: $g 8. $t Dismissal: Neocolonialism, Race, and Anti-Blackness. $g 2. $t Anxieties of Liberalism: Secularism, Feminism, and Suitable Muslim Women -- $g 3. $t A Genealogy of Neocolonial Social Comportment -- $g 4. $t The Hijab and the Sari: The Strange and the Sexy Between Colonialism and Global Capitalism -- $g 5. $t Reversing the Gaze: The Racial-Cultural Aesthetics of Power -- $g 6. $t Transparency and the Deceptive Conceit of Liberalism -- $g 7. $t Discrimination, Neoliberalism, and Suitable Women -- $g 8. $t Dismissal: Neocolonialism, Race, and Anti-Blackness. 650 0 $a Muslim women $z United States $x Ethnic identity. 650 0 $a Neoliberalism $z United States. 650 0 $a Marginality, Social $z United States. 650 6 $a Musulmanes $x Identité ethnique $z Ãtats-Unis. 650 6 $a Néo-libéralisme $z Ãtats-Unis. 650 7 $a Marginality, Social. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01009156 650 7 $a Neoliberalism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01737382 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 776 08 $i Online version: $a Sheth, Falguni A. $t Unruly women $d New York : Oxford University Press, 2022 $z 9780197547168 $w (DLC) 2021038635 830 0 $a Philosophy of race (Oxford University Press). 941 $a 1 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20230121010232.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=46EA955C995911EDB976125E44ECA4DB 994 $a Z0 $b NIUInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
