Just a few years earlier, some had been slaves. Several thousand African Americans served as soldiers in the Indian Wars and in the Cuban campaign of the Spanish-American War in the latter part of the nineteenth century. They were known as buffalo soldiers, believed to have been named by Indians who had seen a similarity between the coarse hair and dark skin of the soldiers and the coats of the buffalo. Twenty-three of these men won the nation's highest award for personal bravery, the Medal of Honor. Black Valor brings the lives of these soldiers into sharp focus. 610 10 $a United States. $b Army $x History $x History $y 19th century. 650 0 $a African Americans $z West (U.S.) $x History $y 19th century. 650 0 $a African American soldiers $z West (U.S.) $x History $y 19th century. 650 0 $a Medal of Honor. 650 0 $a Indians of North America $x Wars $y 1866-1895. 650 0 $a Spanish-American War, 1898 $x Participation, African American. 651 0 $a West (U.S.) $x History. 941 $a 2 952 $l UVAX975 $d 20240215013451.0 952 $l UQAX771 $d 20110226010740.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=D9F5CD4256D911DFB46C8AF9A7D7520A 994 $a 01 $b IWSInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
