Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s was an empiricist and historian whose work on the presidency shows that value commitments do not translate smoothly into policy achievements. Possessing the dispositions and skills to address setbacks and unexpected crises was as vital to Franklin Roosevelt's and John Kennedy's accomplishments as their liberal moral views. At the same time, Schlesinger implied several key skills Roosevelt and Kennedy demonstrated were moral virtues rather than mere techniques intended to enhance the President's power. Schlesinger's moral framework relies on insights about trends in American history to argue Roosevelt's and Kennedy's ironic virtues often helped them avoid dangerous illusions to which Americans have been prone to succumb. Appreciating the history-based regime analysis at the heart of Schlesinger's liberalism opens up a new avenue of presidential analysis and may offer a path forward. In an age where external, institutional checks on the Presidency continue to dwindle, internal checks on Presidential overreach become all the more necessary. Schlesinger may have acknowledged and often championed the expansion of the President's institutional powers, but he also urged liberal leaders to cultivate ironic virtues to prevent these powers' abuse. That his counsel was grounded in conservative insights as well as liberal values makes it accessible to leaders across the political spectrum"-- $c Provided by publisher. 600 10 $a Schlesinger, Arthur M., $c Jr. $q (Arthur Meier), $d 1917-2007. 600 10 $a Roosevelt, Franklin D. $q (Franklin Delano), $d 1882-1945. 600 10 $a Kennedy, John F. $q (John Fitzgerald), $d 1917-1963. 600 17 $a Kennedy, John F. $q (John Fitzgerald), $d 1917-1963. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00035588 600 17 $a Roosevelt, Franklin D. $q (Franklin Delano), $d 1882-1945. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00032031 600 17 $a Schlesinger, Arthur M., $c Jr. $q (Arthur Meier), $d 1917-2007. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01432453 650 0 $a Presidents $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Liberalism $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Political leadership $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Irony $x History. $z United States $x History. 650 0 $a Executive power $z United States $x History. 651 0 $a United States $x Historiography. 650 7 $a Executive power. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00917857 650 7 $a Historiography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00958221 650 7 $a Irony $x Political aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00979388 650 7 $a Liberalism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00997183 650 7 $a Political leadership. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01069363 650 7 $a Presidents. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01075723 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Lester, Emile. $t Liberalism and leadership. $d Ann Arbor : University of Michigan Press, [2019] $z 9780472125876 $w (DLC) 2019981094 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20191204014534.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=E4374552166311EA9B100A4E97128E48 994 $a 92 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
